Seventeenth-year prodigy Shin Ohashi secured his second gold medal of the competition in spectacular fashion, delivering a historic performance before an ecstatic home audience.
Competing at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre on Thursday, the young Japanese sensation shattered the men’s 200-metre breaststroke world record en route to a stellar victory.
A Record-Shattering Sprint
Clocking a phenomenal time of two minutes and 4.83 seconds, Shin Ohashi comfortably surpassed the previous benchmark of 2:05.48.
That earlier standard had been established by China’s Qin Haiyang during the 2023 World Aquatics Championships held in Fukuoka, Japan.
“The world record was my goal, so I’m very happy to get it,” he said. “Thanks to my fans, my family, all who supported me. My next goal is for the gold medal at the world championships.”
Behind the triumphant teenager, Denis Petrashov of Kazakhstan lagged 3.84 seconds adrift to secure the silver medal.
South Korean competitor Cho Sung-jae rounded out the podium by clocking 2:08.76 to take bronze.
“There was a strong rival in the breaststroke. It went exactly as I had thought,” Cho said of Ohashi. “Honestly, I never imagined a world record would come out of it. I am delighted to come away with a medal.”
International Recognition and Growing Pressure
This remarkable accomplishment arrives mere days after glowing remarks from French swimmer Leon Marchand, the reigning Olympic champion in the 200m breaststroke.
Marchand previously acknowledged the Japanese prodigy as a formidable adversary moving forward.
“I’m scared. I’m very scared of him,” Marchand said of Ohashi. “He’s still so young. His coach is really good. I think his entourage, the people around him, are really good, so I hope he’s going to keep improving.”
An Incredible Medal Haul
Thursday’s stellar achievement builds upon Shin Ohashi’s earlier triumph in the 100m breaststroke, where he shared gold alongside China’s Dong Zhihao with a time of 58.64.
That particular race saw Games record holder Qin settle for the third step of the podium.
Furthermore, the talented youngster propelled the Japanese squad to silver finishes in both the men’s and mixed 4x100m medley relay events.
As competition continues, Shin Ohashi eyes a potential fifth and ultimate medal on Friday during the 50m breaststroke contest, according to Crimson Reporters.
