The political landscape in Berlin underwent a dramatic transformation this past Sunday as Elif Eralp, a prominent figure within The Left (Die Linke), propelled her party to a first-place finish in the state election. This historic victory places Eralp in a prime position to potentially serve as the next governing mayor of Germany’s vibrant capital, marking a significant milestone for both her party and the city’s inclusive political culture.

Eralp’s journey toward the mayoral office is deeply rooted in a history of activism. Born in Munich to Turkish socialists and trade unionists who sought refuge from the 1980 military coup in Turkiye, she was introduced to the power of civil engagement at an early age. By age ten, she was rallying neighborhood friends to create posters advocating for environmental protection—a passion nurtured by parents who regularly brought her along to political demonstrations.

A Historic Political Trajectory

Should she ascend to the role of governing mayor, Eralp would achieve several milestones. She would be the first representative of The Left to lead Berlin since the 1990 reunification, as well as the city’s first mayor of Turkish descent and its first woman of color to occupy the office. Her legal background, bolstered by studies in Hamburg and over a decade of work as a legal adviser for her party, has provided a firm foundation for her legislative ambitions.

Eralp has served in the Berlin House of Representatives since 2021 and was elevated to deputy chair of her party’s parliamentary group in 2024. Her platform has resonated with voters through a clear commitment to social justice. Central to her campaign are promises to stabilize housing costs, implement strict rent controls, and enhance political inclusion for refugees and immigrant communities.

Challenging the Status Quo

The election results serve as a stark counter-narrative to the recent gains made by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. While the AfD secured a victory in Saxony-Anhalt two weeks ago, their third-place finish in Berlin highlights a shifting electorate. Political consultant Martin Fuchs notes that Eralp’s success demonstrates that Germany remains a diverse, open, and liberal nation despite the polarization observed elsewhere.

“There was a strong desire for disruption and radical political change,” says Martin Fuchs.

For Eralp, this momentum is essential to achieving her broader goals. She has long advocated for substantive alternatives to neoliberal policies and maintains a staunch position against the far-right. She believes that active civil society is the fundamental engine of leftist progress.

While The Left secured the highest number of votes, the path to the mayor’s office will require the party to secure strategic alliances to form a governing coalition. As Berliners look toward a future beyond traditional political figures, Eralp represents a pivot toward a more representative, grassroots-oriented style of leadership that champions the multicultural identity of modern Germany.
