Israel Cuts Ties With EU Foreign Chief Over Alleged ‘Apartheid’ Remarks

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has officially suspended all diplomatic contact with the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, following reports that she compared Israel’s treatment of Palestinians to South Africa’s former apartheid regime. The diplomatic rift was ignited by a report from the news outlet Euractiv, which claimed that Kallas made the controversial remarks during high-level discussions with Mexican officials in May. According to the report, Kallas drew parallels between Israel’s policies in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank and the racial segregation system that governed South Africa until the early 1990s.

In a scathing statement posted to social media platform X on Thursday, Saar accused Kallas of harboring a “longstanding bias” against the Jewish state. He characterized the reported comparison as a “blood libel” and insisted that the suspension of ties would remain in effect until the EU official formally retracts the statement. Saar expressed frustration that Kallas had neither clarified nor denied the remarks, asserting that her silence effectively validated the accusations.

Kallas responded to the freeze in communication by emphasizing the necessity of open channels between Brussels and Jerusalem. “Dear Gideon, as you know, the EU and Israel have a lot that binds us,” Kallas wrote, highlighting that dialogue remains the cornerstone of diplomacy, particularly during periods of intense disagreement. She reiterated the European Union’s official stance, which advocates for a two-state solution and maintains that Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are illegal under international law. However, her failure to explicitly address or condemn the apartheid allegation left Saar unmoved, as he immediately confirmed that his decision to cut ties stands.
