The Lebanon National News Agency (NNA) detailed that an Israeli drone targeted a vehicle near the town of Kfar Tebnit, resulting in two fatalities. A separate strike in Zabadin claimed the life of at least one more individual, while an additional drone attack in the Beit Yahoun area of the Nabatieh governorate left two people wounded. These incidents have fueled concerns that the fragile US-brokered ceasefire is struggling to take hold on the ground.
Compounding the diplomatic friction is the release of a new map by the Israeli military, which delineates its current positions approximately 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory. The map, which references a "Yellow Line" framework similar to strategies employed in the Gaza Strip, has drawn sharp criticism from legal experts. Analysts warn that the occupation of these specific zones, particularly those extending into maritime waters, could constitute a direct violation of the 2022 US-brokered maritime border agreement between Israel and Lebanon.
The maritime encroachment is particularly sensitive due to the presence of the Qana gas project. Under the 2022 agreement, Lebanon was granted explicit exploration rights to this area. Any prolonged Israeli military presence in these waters threatens to undermine the legal and economic foundations of that deal, potentially triggering a wider dispute over regional energy resources.
Inside Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing significant domestic pressure from members of his own Likud party to challenge the US-backed ceasefire efforts. Moshe Saada, a prominent Likud politician, voiced public opposition to the withdrawal of troops, arguing that such a move presents an “existential threat” to the nation. Saada urged the Prime Minister to resist international calls for restraint, advocating for a policy of maximum force rather than proportionality.
Reporting from Beirut, Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr noted that while there has been a perceptible decrease in the intensity of widespread aerial bombardment, targeted drone strikes remain a daily reality. According to Khodr, Hezbollah feels emboldened by the US-Iran deal, interpreting it as a sign of strengthened leverage. The militant group has signaled its intent to respond to every Israeli strike, demonstrating that it will not abide by a one-sided ceasefire.
The escalating tit-for-tat exchanges continue to claim lives on both sides, with the Israeli military confirming casualties among its ranks following retaliatory fire from Hezbollah.
