India’s women’s cricket team has successfully defended their Asian Games gold medal, delivering a commanding performance against Sri Lanka in the final at Korogi Athletic Park. The emphatic 147-run victory highlighted India’s dominance as they posted the highest total in the tournament’s history, finishing at 216-3.

The star of the show was undoubtedly Smriti Mandhana. The opening batter displayed remarkable form, dismantling the Sri Lankan bowling attack with a whirlwind 79-run knock off just 45 balls. Her aggressive approach, featuring seven sixes and five fours, effectively took the game away from the opposition early on.

Record-Breaking Batting Display

After captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bat, the Indian openers set a blistering pace. Shafali Verma, who arrived at the final fresh off a century in the semifinals, partnered with Mandhana to put on 99 runs before Verma fell for 48. This opening salvo laid the foundation for the record-breaking total.

Following the dismissal of Verma, Mandhana continued her onslaught, ably supported by the middle order. Even after the captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, fell for 19, the momentum did not shift. The final stages of the innings saw Richa Ghosh produce an explosive 49 off 22 balls, ensuring India surpassed the 200-run mark in the final over.

The final over proved particularly costly for the Sri Lankan side. Bowler Mithali Ayodhya struggled with her line and length, conceding eight wides and allowing Ghosh and Bharti Fulmali to plunder 25 runs. This late surge pushed the score to 216-3, a total that proved insurmountable for the challengers.

Sri Lanka Collapse Under Pressure

In response, the Sri Lankan batting lineup crumbled under the weight of the massive target. They were never truly in the hunt, losing wickets at regular intervals. Captain Chamari Athapaththu offered the only resistance with 29 runs, but her efforts were in vain as the team was skittled for 69 in just 15.4 overs.

“The batting depth we displayed today was truly exceptional, setting a standard for the tournament,” noted team observers regarding the clinical nature of the final.

The result sees Sri Lanka walking away with the silver medal, unable to match the firepower of the Indian squad on the big stage. The disparity in performance was evident, as Mandhana alone outscored the entire Sri Lankan team by ten runs, underscoring her individual brilliance.

Earlier in the day, the bronze medal match saw Pakistan secure a 31-run victory over Bangladesh. Captain Fatima Sana proved instrumental, pulling her team back from a precarious 67-5. Her vital contribution of 45 runs off 30 balls, alongside a 67-run partnership with Aliya Riaz, guided Pakistan to 145-8, a total that Bangladesh could not surpass.
