Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair has once again utilized his platform in the National Football League to advocate for the children of Gaza. Despite facing disciplinary action from the league, Al-Shaair continues to display the names of Palestinian children killed in the ongoing conflict on his eye black during professional games.

During a recent Sunday matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, the athlete donned eye black inscribed with the name “Wafaa Akila.” This act of remembrance follows a previous incident during a September 13 game against the Buffalo Bills, where Al-Shaair wore the name of Hind Rajab. That display resulted in an $11,941 fine from the NFL, citing a breach of league policies regarding equipment and player attire.

The linebacker remains undeterred by the financial penalties imposed by the league. Addressing the media regarding the fine, Al-Shaair emphasized that his commitment to the cause transcends monetary consequences.

“It’s bigger to me; what’s a life worth? Is a life worth $11,000? No, I think it’s priceless,”

he stated when asked about the league’s disciplinary response.

A Gesture of Solidarity

Al-Shaair is not alone in his stance. Following his initial fine, NBA star Kyrie Irving offered to cover the cost of the penalty. The linebacker confirmed that he has maintained communication with the nine-time All-Star throughout this period of public scrutiny.

The name now featured on his eye black belongs to Wafaa Akila, an eight-year-old girl whose life was cut short on September 6. On what was intended to be her first day of school, Akila and her father were killed in an Israeli drone strike in western Gaza. Witnesses noted that the vehicle was left charred, with only fragments of the child’s school books remaining among the wreckage.

The Human Cost of Conflict

The circumstances surrounding Akila’s death mirror those of Hind Rajab, who was killed in early 2024 after her family’s vehicle came under fire. These deaths underscore the devastating impact of the conflict on the civilian population, particularly children. According to data provided by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, at least 21,500 children have been killed since October 7, 2023.

Beyond the loss of life, the conflict has created a crisis in education for the youth of the region. Approximately 660,000 children are facing severe disruptions to their schooling, with reports indicating that 90 percent of educational facilities in the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed.

Al-Shaair’s consistent use of his visibility as an NFL player to highlight these tragedies keeps the focus on the humanitarian crisis. By continuing to wear the names of young victims, he ensures that the stories of children like Wafaa Akila are not forgotten, even as he navigates the strict regulatory environment of the NFL.
