Yemen’s internationally recognized government forces have intensified their military operations, reporting a significant tactical victory in the battle-scarred Taiz province. Amid a surge in violence that has claimed over 60 lives, including civilians, government troops successfully recaptured the Hais district. This territory serves as a vital logistics link between the provinces of Hodeidah, Taiz, and Ibb.
The latest offensive marks a dramatic spike in the ongoing hostilities between government forces and the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. Following weeks of tit-for-tat exchanges, the military has utilized a combination of ground assaults and drone strikes to push back against Houthi positions. In the nearby al-Jarahi district, government forces successfully executed a counteroffensive, capturing dozens of rebel fighters in the process.
Government Vows to Restore Order
The Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, addressed the mounting tension with a firm stance on the government’s capabilities. He emphasized that the national armed forces are prepared to reclaim full sovereignty over Yemeni territory, warning the rebels that they face inevitable defeat.
“The Houthis will bear the consequences of their miscalculations, which will lead to their complete collapse. Taiz will not be a corridor for the group’s backers,” stated al-Alimi.
His remarks underscore the government’s resolve to sever regional influence over the conflict, specifically citing the role of Iran. The military has further signaled that any Houthi attempts to advance toward the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait will be met with “harsh attrition” by government forces.
Escalating Humanitarian Crisis
While military leaders celebrate strategic gains, the civilian cost of the renewed fighting has been catastrophic. Reports from Taiz indicate that 60 individuals have perished in the recent wave of violence. The impact on non-combatants remains severe, with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reporting that approximately 1,800 families have been displaced within the last 48 hours alone.
The tragedy deepened on Saturday when Houthi shelling targeted a civilian gathering along the critical road artery connecting Taiz and Aden. This attack resulted in four confirmed civilian deaths and left nine others suffering from various injuries. The indiscriminate nature of these skirmishes has left local populations trapped in the crossfire of the intensifying conflict.
Military Tactics and Weaponry
The Yemeni Defence Ministry has begun deploying new, sophisticated weapons systems to maintain its momentum on the front lines. Colonel Majed al-Nozaili, the military spokesman, noted that these strikes were a necessary response to the group’s repeated violations and escalations. Recent operations include:
- Coordinated drone strikes destroying Houthi reinforcements south of al-Jarahi.
- Ground offensives aimed at securing supply routes in Lahj and Taiz.
- The use of enhanced artillery to counter Houthi positions throughout the region.
As the government seeks to consolidate its control over the Hais district, the intensity of the explosions heard in Taiz suggests that the conflict is far from reaching a diplomatic resolution. The combination of sustained air raids and ground operations continues to reshape the landscape of the war.
