Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has made a public plea to the club’s hierarchy, urging them to resist the allure of a lucrative transfer bid for Dutch international forward Cody Gakpo. With the Premier League transfer window deadline looming on Tuesday, rumors have intensified regarding a potential move to Manchester City, with reports suggesting the reigning champions are preparing a substantial £75 million offer.
Gakpo has become an integral figure at Anfield over the past three and a half years, netting an impressive 51 goals and serving as a key contributor to the squad’s triumphant 20th English top-flight title during the 2024–25 campaign. Despite this history, the club appears willing to entertain offers as they look to reshape their attacking options.
A Shift in the Anfield Hierarchy
The uncertainty surrounding Gakpo’s future stems from Liverpool’s pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain sensation Bradley Barcola. The proposed acquisition of the Frenchman, valued at an eye-watering $166 million, would make him the second-most expensive signing in the history of the Premier League. His arrival would undoubtedly shuffle the current pecking order, potentially sidelining Gakpo.
Van Dijk, however, remains a staunch defender of his compatriot’s value to the team.
“He’s a quality player, and I think we should keep quality players, but let’s see what the next three days bring,”
Van Dijk stated.
“Obviously, it’s pretty clear that I want him to stay, not only because he is the quality player that he is, but also because he’s a friend of mine, and I think he will be very important for us.”
The Iraola Era Begins
Manager Andoni Iraola, tasked with succeeding the sacked Arne Slot, has endured a challenging start to his tenure. While Liverpool has demonstrated resilience by salvaging points in consecutive 2-2 draws against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, the team’s defensive vulnerabilities have been laid bare. Despite these early hiccups, the squad remains focused on finding their rhythm.
Regarding the potential arrival of Barcola, Van Dijk remains philosophical about the club’s stature in the transfer market.
“I think Liverpool are still one of the biggest clubs in the world,”
he noted.
“Obviously, we all know that we’re going through a transition, and you either want to be part of it, or you don’t.”
Looking Ahead
For now, the focus remains firmly on the upcoming deadline. Should Barcola arrive, Van Dijk insists the newcomer would be welcomed with open arms, though he prefers to wait for official confirmation before discussing the tactical implications. The next seventy-two hours will prove pivotal in determining whether Gakpo remains at Anfield or embarks on a new chapter at the Etihad Stadium.
As it stands, the club must balance its financial ambitions with the need to maintain squad cohesion during this critical period of transition.
