Fresh violence has erupted in southern Lebanon, casting a shadow over high-level diplomatic efforts in Washington. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that an Israeli drone strike killed three people and wounded another in a vehicle traveling between Zawtar and Mayfadoun in the Nabatieh Governorate on Thursday.
The incident marks a grim continuation of hostilities despite an ongoing ceasefire. Beyond the vehicle strike, the Israeli military reportedly set fire to multiple residential homes in the town of Ain Arab. These actions followed evacuation orders issued to local residents, further displacing civilians in an already volatile region.
Reporting from Nabatieh, Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr noted that the ceasefire remains exceptionally fragile. While Israeli forces failed to occupy these front-line villages during the height of the conflict, they continue to exert “control by fire.” Analysts suggest this strategy is intended to maximize leverage as officials negotiate a potential territorial handover.
The violence coincides with the final day of intensive US-backed negotiations in Washington. These talks have focused on a transition plan that would see Israeli forces withdraw from occupied positions in southern Lebanon, handing security control over to the Lebanese military.
Diplomatic signals remain mixed. While a US State Department official indicated that Israel had taken a “concrete step” by initiating a partial pullback from a buffer zone, a senior Israeli defense official publicly denied any such withdrawal, stating that Israel intends to maintain its current defensive positions.
The human cost of the conflict remains staggering. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, the death toll since March 2 has reached 4,230, with over 12,000 individuals injured. As diplomats in Washington attempt to finalize a sustainable path forward, the situation on the ground remains marked by military pressure and civilian displacement.
