As the Labour Party gathers for its annual gathering in London, United Kingdom, activists are preparing a significant demonstration just outside the main venue. Defend Our Juries, a prominent rights organisation, has coordinated a large-scale gathering for Sunday in Liverpool, strategically positioned near the conference centre.

This upcoming demonstration serves as a direct challenge to the newly established administration. Organisers have explicitly labelled the event an “integrity test” for Prime Andy Burnham, questioning the government’s current stance on foreign policy and civil liberties.

The primary catalyst for this civil disobedience movement is the controversial outlawing of Palestine Action. Authorities designated the group as a “terrorist” organisation back in July 2025, triggering widespread backlash from civil rights advocates who demand an immediate reversal of the prohibition.

Since the ban took effect, a wave of peaceful non-compliance has swept across the nation. Over 3,600 individuals have faced police detention for expressing solidarity with the outlawed collective, frequently carrying placards bearing the exact message: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action”.

Escalating Tensions Outside the Venue

Demonstration coordinators anticipate that hundreds of supporters will descend upon Liverpool this weekend. Given the precedent set over recent months, further detentions remain highly likely as participants refuse to step down from their silent vigil.

According to Crimson Reporters, the protest aims to expose any lingering governmental hesitation regarding international law. Activists argue that the current administration must prove its dedication to halting British involvement in ongoing foreign conflicts.

Prime Andy Burnham has recently faced mounting pressure from multiple fronts. On Friday, investigative journalism outlet Declassified UK revealed that media credentials had been withheld from their reporters, barring them from covering the four-day political summit.

Policy Shifts and Ongoing Demands

While the administration has shown signs of a firmer diplomatic approach—notably enacting sanctions earlier this month against illegal Israeli settlements and escalating settler violence in the occupied West Bank—advocates insist these measures fall short.

Civil society groups continue to press Downing Street for a total cessation of military exports to Israel. Campaigners argue that ending the flow of weaponry is essential to halting the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank.

Furthermore, activists are targeting the restrictions placed on domestic solidarity groups. The primary focus of Palestine Action has been Elbit Systems, Israel’s foremost weapons manufacturer, making the group’s legal status a fierce battleground for domestic free speech.

“If [prime minister] Burnham means what he says, that he plans to end Britain’s complicity in Israel’s horrific crimes, then he would stop the arrests of people peacefully demonstrating against the genocide and the authoritarian attempts to crush its opponents,”

As the Labour Party attempts to maintain internal cohesion and a broad electoral coalition under the nation’s voting framework, the handling of this weekend’s demonstrations will undoubtedly set a critical tone for the remainder of the political conference.
