The ongoing feud between the administration and major news organizations escalated further when the White House decided to exclude CNN from traveling aboard Air Force One.
Instead of the traditional broadcast network representation, conservative outlet Real America’s Voice News was given the seat for President Donald Trump’s upcoming journey to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he plans to watch a college football game.
This development follows closely behind an earlier announcement from President Donald Trump revealing that access to White House grounds had been revoked for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico.
The Boycott by Broadcast Partners
To ensure continuous coverage, the White House press pool typically relies on five prominent broadcast entities that rotate responsibilities for filming and distributing footage of executive events.
Demonstrating remarkable unity following the restriction, the remaining four participants in the pool—Fox, ABC, CBS, and NBC—opted out of their duties until normal access policies are reinstated.
Legal Battles and Free Speech Claims
In response to the administration’s restrictions, the three targeted news organizations initiated legal action by filing a lawsuit that accuses the White House of violating constitutionally protected First Amendment rights.
“Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference,”
their joint statement asserted.
Seeking immediate relief, the plaintiffs argued that the government’s actions constituted an unwarranted assault on independent reporting and public information.
Judicial Intervention
Presiding over the case, US District Judge Timothy Kelly issued an overnight ruling temporarily halting the administration’s ban early on Thursday.
The judge pointed out that government officials failed to provide adequate factual backing for their assertion that barring the organizations was necessary to safeguard national security.
Elaborating on his decision, US District Judge Timothy Kelly noted that authorities presented zero classified or unclassified evidence demonstrating how specific coverage mentioned in their official letters had caused harm to national security interests.
Scope of the Ruling and Future Access
Although the magistrate’s directive explicitly targeted White House press credentials, it did not explicitly address traveling privileges or pool rotation duties.
Addressing this nuance, attorney Theodore Boutrous Jr., representing the news organizations, spoke on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper” on Friday to express confidence that the magistrate’s order inherently covers pool access as well.
Conventionally, the designated seat on the presidential aircraft belongs exclusively to a representative from the network video pool, a group that Real America’s Voice News does not belong to, according to Crimson Reporters.
