Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has sparked widespread controversy after sharing footage of himself confronting Palestinian women held in an Israeli detention facility. The video, released on the minister’s official account, captures him personally addressing grievances raised by the detainees regarding their current living conditions, which include reports of limited access to hygiene and medical care.
In the recording, one of the prisoners can be heard describing the dire situation inside the facility. She specifically highlighted that the women had been denied the ability to bathe for three consecutive days and were suffering from a lack of medical attention and clean clothing. Rather than addressing these concerns, Ben-Gvir used the platform to declare that the era of comfortable prison conditions has officially concluded.
A Policy of Maximum Restriction
Addressing the prisoners directly, Ben-Gvir stated,
“The good conditions in the prisons are over. This is the current situation, and I am directly responsible for everything. I am pleased with these conditions.”
He further justified his stance by asserting that his policies are a response to the conditions experienced by Israeli captives held in Gaza, framing his actions as a necessary standard of the “bare minimum.”
Since his appointment as National Security Minister in late 2022, Ben-Gvir has aggressively pursued a policy aimed at stripping away privileges for Palestinian inmates. His administration has consistently implemented stringent measures to exert greater control over the prison population, which includes approximately 9,400 individuals according to the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs.
Escalating Tensions and Human Rights Concerns
The specific measures pushed by the minister include significant reductions in food and water rations, strictly limited shower access, curtailed family visitation rights, and the frequent transfer of prisoners between different facilities. These administrative actions have faced intense scrutiny from human rights organizations and Palestinian advocacy groups who argue that the environment inside these facilities has become increasingly punitive.
Palestinian authorities have condemned the minister’s latest video as a form of political theater designed to intimidate the female detainees. The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs stated that the visit was not a genuine inspection, but rather an act of public incitement intended to break the spirit of the prisoners through humiliation and documented abuse.
Accusations of Systematic Abuse
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society expressed strong opposition to the publication of the footage, labeling the act an explicit assault on the human dignity of the incarcerated women. The group noted that their organization has collected hundreds of testimonies from individuals who have been released from detention, documenting a consistent pattern of torture, starvation, and systematic deprivation.
Despite legal challenges, including a 2025 instance where Ben-Gvir publicly disregarded a court ruling that mandated the provision of adequate food for prisoners, the minister remains steadfast. By broadcasting these encounters, he signals a continued commitment to his controversial agenda, prioritizing a policy of strict deterrence over the humanitarian standards typically expected within correctional institutions.
