A tragic structural failure occurred in Gaza City overnight, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 Palestinians when a six-storey residential building collapsed. The structure, which had been previously compromised by Israeli military strikes, succumbed to its extensive damage, leaving dozens of residents buried beneath the debris. Among those confirmed deceased are at least five children, with at least 14 other individuals currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.
The Palestinian Civil Defence has been leading the desperate search and recovery efforts. Footage from the scene highlights the harrowing reality of the rescue operation, as emergency personnel and local volunteers work side-by-side to clear wreckage. In a heartbreaking turn, rescue workers have been forced to dig by hand to reach those trapped, as the specialized heavy machinery required for such technical operations remains largely unavailable in the territory.
A Fragile Infrastructure
The building’s collapse is being viewed as a symptom of a broader humanitarian crisis. Local reports indicate that the structure had been hit during a previous Israeli bombing, leaving it with visible cracks and deep structural instability. Despite these clear risks, many families have had no choice but to remain in such buildings.
“Civil defence teams are still working to recover martyrs from under the rubble and search for missing people,” said Mahmoud Basal, a spokesperson for the Gaza civil defence. “Until now, there are nearly 100 Palestinians still under the rubble of this building.”
Basal emphasized that the lack of appropriate equipment severely hampers their ability to save lives. Because international restrictions limit the entry of essential construction materials and heavy machinery, rescuers are often left with little more than their bare hands to perform life-saving tasks.
Limited Options for Displaced Families
The ongoing war has caused widespread devastation to thousands of buildings across Gaza. Many displaced families find themselves in an impossible position: staying in unstable, war-damaged homes or facing the threat of total displacement without adequate shelter. Basal noted that the absence of sufficient refugee centres or suitable tents forces families to reside in structures that pose a constant threat to their safety.
Emergency Response Stretched to the Limit
The strain on municipal services is reaching a breaking point. Yahya Al Sarraj, the mayor of Gaza City, described the local response capabilities as effectively paralyzed. The inability to secure proper tools for rescue operations has become a recurring nightmare for the authorities.
- The collapse resulted in 20 confirmed deaths, including five children.
- Approximately 100 people are estimated to remain trapped under the debris.
- Rescue efforts are significantly slowed by a lack of heavy equipment.
- Structural damage from prior bombings remains the primary cause of the collapse.
As the search continues, the Government Media Office in Gaza has leveled criticism at the ongoing restrictions, highlighting that the humanitarian cost of these equipment shortages is growing daily. Without a change in conditions, officials fear that further structural failures are inevitable.
