The protracted conflict in Yemen has entered a volatile new phase as the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels trade heavy fire. Tensions reached a breaking point this week following a series of cross-border missile and drone strikes launched by the Iran-aligned Houthi group, which resulted in injuries to 13 civilians across three separate Saudi cities.
The Saudi-led coalition, which actively supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government, vowed a decisive and firm response to the aggression. Major-General Turki al-Maliki, a spokesperson for the coalition, stated that the military would take all necessary actions to defend the sovereignty of the kingdom and protect its citizens from future aerial incursions.
“The Joint Forces Command of the Coalition will deal with these attacks responsibly and firmly to protect the sovereignty of the kingdom,” said coalition spokesperson Major-General Turki al-Maliki.
In the immediate aftermath of the coalition’s warning, the Houthis reported that Saudi forces conducted 54 air raids across multiple governorates within a 24-hour window. The targeted regions included Lahj, Taiz, al-Jawf, Marib, and Hajjah. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree claimed that advanced F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets were utilized in the operation, originating from bases in Khamis Mushait and Taif.
Humanitarian Impact of Escalating Violence
Reports from Houthi-affiliated media outlets suggest that the Saudi air campaign has caused significant civilian casualties. Specifically, in the Dhubab and Maqbanah districts of Taiz province, three civilians—including two children—were reportedly killed, with at least two others suffering injuries. The strikes also hit a government complex in the Khadir district, further exacerbating local tensions.
The recent exchange of fire follows a massive Monday assault by the Houthis, who claimed to have targeted the King Khalid airbase in Khamis Mushait. The group alleged that their drone and missile barrage successfully struck critical infrastructure, including radar systems, runways, hangars, and ammunition depots.
Strategic Shifts in the Red Sea
Observers are increasingly concerned about the shifting front lines in western Yemen. Last week, Houthi fighters achieved significant territorial gains, securing control over vast stretches of the Red Sea coast. Their recent advancement toward the Bab al-Mandeb strait is particularly alarming to the international community.
The strait serves as a vital maritime artery for global energy supplies and commercial shipping. Its strategic importance has grown exponentially as geopolitical instability, particularly regarding US-Iran tensions, continues to disrupt the flow of goods through the Strait of Hormuz.
While the Saudi-led coalition remains committed to its military objectives, the humanitarian cost of the conflict continues to mount. With neither side showing an immediate willingness to de-escalate, the cycle of retaliatory strikes remains a defining characteristic of this regional crisis. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet provided an official statement regarding the specific claims made by the Houthis regarding the latest round of air raids.
