Tensions in the occupied West Bank have surged following a lethal Israeli military operation in the city of Jenin. On Friday, an Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle and a building under construction, resulting in the deaths of three Palestinian men. The Israeli military confirmed the operation, stating that they had “eliminated” the individuals, identifying one as a Hamas operative along with two of his accomplices.

The incident has sparked conflicting reports regarding the affiliations of those killed. While the Israeli military pointed to Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad issued a formal statement identifying the primary target as Qais Bitawi, describing him as a senior operative within their own armed wing. Hamas, for its part, condemned the lethal strike but refrained from claiming Bitawi as one of its members.

Operational Details and Medical Obstruction

Witness accounts and reports from the Palestinian Wafa news agency describe a chaotic scene in the western sector of Jenin City. According to these reports, the drone strike struck a house currently under construction. Following the initial blast, the Palestine Red Crescent reported that Israeli ground forces moved in to raid the site. The ambulance service alleged that their personnel were briefly detained and prevented from accessing the wounded or transporting the victims to the hospital, sparking international concerns regarding the treatment of medical staff during active conflict.

The Israeli leadership expressed strong support for the military action. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded the operation as a “successful thwarting” of the targeted individuals. Similarly, Defence Minister Israel Katz extended his congratulations to the military, police, and the Shin Bet security agency. Katz further stated that the Jenin refugee camp had been effectively “evacuated of residents” and asserted that the Israeli military would maintain a permanent presence in the area, comparing it to other locations across the West Bank.

Broader Implications for the West Bank

“The occupation’s bombing of Jenin will not break our will; Palestinians will continue to cling to their land and rights,” the group stated in a formal response to the violence.

Hamas has called upon the global community to intervene immediately to halt what it characterized as Israeli “crimes” and to end the prevailing atmosphere of impunity. The group emphasized that Israel must be held fully responsible for the potential repercussions of this escalation.

While the occupied West Bank has experienced frequent military raids and rising violence from both soldiers and settlers, the use of targeted air strikes remains a less common tactic compared to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. The region, which is nominally under the administration of the Palestinian Authority, remains a volatile flashpoint. This latest development underscores a potential shift toward more aggressive, high-intensity military tactics within the territory as regional instability continues to grow following the events of October 7, 2023.
