Somalia Denounces Israel’s Recognition of Breakaway Somaliland

The Federal Government of Somalia has issued a stern warning to Israel, accusing the nation of violating its territorial sovereignty following Jerusalem’s formal recognition of Somaliland in December 2025. Mogadishu officials characterized the move as an act of diplomatic aggression, asserting that any international engagement with the self-declared republic undermines Somalia’s national unity and long-standing regional stability.

Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991, has functioned as a de facto state for over three decades without widespread international recognition. Israel’s decision to formally acknowledge the breakaway region marks a significant pivot in its East African foreign policy, potentially aimed at strengthening security and trade ties in the strategically vital Horn of Africa.
