Deadly Attack Rocks Niger’s Capital: 35 Killed at Niamey Airport

A violent assault on the Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, the capital of Niger, has left at least 35 people dead, marking a significant escalation in the security crisis plaguing the Sahel region. According to a formal statement from the Ministry of Defence, the casualties include 11 soldiers and two civilians killed during the heavy fighting, while security forces neutralized 22 of the attackers. Additionally, authorities have apprehended approximately 20 suspects as a large-scale military operation continues in the vicinity.

The dawn raid began at approximately 6:00 a.m. local time on Thursday when gunmen, reportedly arriving at a security checkpoint via taxi, engaged in a fierce firefight with government forces. Local residents reported hearing intense artillery fire and heavy automatic weapon exchanges for several hours. One airport employee, attempting to reach his workplace, was forced to turn back after witnessing a massive military deployment and hearing the sustained gunfire that echoed across the perimeter of the complex.

The Diori Hamani International Airport serves as a vital strategic asset, housing both civilian terminals and a critical military airbase. The facility is a hub for counter-terrorism efforts, hosting the G5 Sahel force and various international military units, including Russian personnel and specialized drone assets. Furthermore, the airport stores significant uranium stocks, prompting authorities to voice concerns over the environmental risks posed by any direct strike on the facility.

While no group has immediately claimed responsibility for Thursday's assault, the tactical nature of the attack mirrors previous incursions. In January, an ISIL-affiliated group targeted the same complex, claiming they intended to disrupt anti-rebel operations and strike air command headquarters. That earlier assault resulted in the deaths of 20 fighters and left four soldiers wounded, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of Niger’s most sensitive military installations.

In response to the persistent threat, the government had recently implemented aggressive security measures, including the demolition of thousands of informal homes near the airport perimeter, which officials claimed were being used as hideouts by insurgent groups. The airport's defensive infrastructure had also been bolstered with an expanded fence line and the installation of over 350 security cameras. Despite these efforts, Thursday’s breach indicates that armed groups remain capable of launching coordinated, high-impact operations against the state.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the situation is currently under control and that the airport remains fully operational and secure for commercial air traffic. Sporadic gunfire reported by witnesses as late as midday was attributed to ongoing sweeping operations by the army to ensure the area is cleared of remaining insurgent cells. The government maintains that the search for any remaining attackers is a top priority.
