AU Summit 2026: Burundi Takes the Helm as Africa Tackles Water Crisis

African leaders gathered in Addis Ababa this Saturday for the 39th African Union (AU) Summit, marking a pivotal shift in continental leadership. President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi officially took over as AU Chairman for 2026, succeeding Angola’s João Lourenço.  

Nigeria’s Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, joined nearly 50 heads of state and UN Secretary-General António Guterres to address the urgent theme: Sustainable Water and Sanitation. As Africa pursues its "Agenda 2063," leaders are prioritizing resource mobilization and climate resilience.  

Outgoing Chair Lourenço highlighted progress in security and infrastructure but urged the AU to further strengthen conflict resolution mechanisms. Meanwhile, Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Ali showcased "smart agriculture" as a blueprint for the continent's growing population. This summit signals a renewed, unified push for a peaceful, water-secure Africa.
