Iraqi security forces have successfully located and seized a sophisticated drone-launching platform believed to be responsible for a recent strike on a major Saudi Arabian oil pipeline. The recovery follows an intensive investigation led by an intelligence and security task force, marking a critical development in regional security efforts.
The operation focused on the Maysan province in southeastern Iraq, an area strategically positioned near the Iranian border. Authorities identified the al-Tayeb border district as the probable launch site, noting its proximity to key geographic landmarks including the Duwayrij River and Tayeb Island.
Advanced Technology Employed
Security officials noted that the drones utilized in the attack were not simple tactical units but rather long-range, advanced systems. Given that the targeted infrastructure is located approximately 1,100 kilometers from Medina and 800 kilometers from Riyadh, the scale of the operation suggests a high degree of technical planning and sophisticated equipment.
Lieutenant General Saad Maan, head of Iraq’s Security Media Cell, confirmed the seizure in an official statement. He emphasized that forensic and technical teams are currently analyzing the equipment to determine the identity of the perpetrators behind the Thursday strike, which resulted in injuries and significant operational disruptions.
Regional Security Commitments
“Iraq adopts the principle of ‘preventive sovereignty’, which means not only preventing attacks on our territory, but also not allowing our land to be a launching pad against any other country, or for Iraq to be part of a proxy war,” said Lieutenant General Saad Maan.
Baghdad is maintaining open communication channels with Saudi authorities to ensure the seamless sharing of intelligence. Additionally, Iraq’s commander-in-chief has approved a request from Iranian officials to join the investigation, facilitating a collaborative approach to verifying the gathered findings.
Impact on Global Energy
The targeted East-West oil pipeline is a vital asset for global energy security, carrying roughly 4 to 5 percent of the world’s total oil supply. By allowing Saudi Arabia to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, the pipeline serves as a critical strategic conduit. Consequently, the kingdom opted for a precautionary shutdown following the incident.
In the interest of regional stability, Saudi Arabia has decided to refrain from immediate retaliation, largely in response to requests from the Iraqi government. Iraqi authorities have taken proactive measures, including temporary closures of border crossings like Shalamcheh and Mandali for intensive security inspections.
Ongoing Investigative Efforts
Iraqi army spokesman Sabah al-Numan confirmed that security agencies are actively pursuing all individuals suspected of involvement in the incident. To bolster domestic security, the Iraqi Prime Minister has initiated a reshuffle of military commanders. The government remains steadfast in its goal of maintaining regional neutrality while ensuring that its borders are not utilized for external conflicts or proxy warfare activities.
