In a significant post-deadline shake-up, Premier League champions Arsenal have confirmed the permanent transfer of Brazil forward Gabriel Martinelli to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal. While the official financial details remain undisclosed, reports from British media indicate the agreement is valued at a guaranteed 60 million pounds. This figure marks a club-record departure fee for the Gunners, eclipsing the 35 million pounds Liverpool paid for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2017.
Martinelli, 25, has officially committed his future to the Saudi side by signing a four-year contract. He joins an ambitious Al-Hilal squad currently locked in a fierce battle for the top spot in the Saudi Pro League alongside Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr. The Brazilian expressed his excitement in an official unveiling video, stating, “Proud to be blue, proud to be Al-Hilal.”
A Shift in the Gunners’ Attack
The Brazilian international’s move follows a flurry of activity in the Arsenal dressing room. The club has also parted ways with left-sided forward Leandro Trossard, who secured a transfer to Turkish side Besiktas. While Arsenal has bolstered their ranks with the acquisition of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, analysts are questioning whether these late adjustments leave the team’s attacking depth compromised for the challenges ahead.
Martinelli’s exit concludes a memorable tenure in North London. During his time at Arsenal, he accumulated nearly 300 appearances and netted 62 goals. His trophy cabinet at the Emirates includes the 2020 FA Cup and the 2023 Community Shield. Last season, he was instrumental in the club’s pursuit of domestic glory, contributing 11 goals across 53 appearances as Arsenal secured their first top-flight title since 2004.
Lingering Tensions Over Exit
Despite his status as a key contributor to the league-winning campaign, Martinelli’s recent standing under manager Mikel Arteta had deteriorated. Having been omitted from the first two matchday squads of the current season, it became evident that the player’s opportunities for regular first-team football were becoming increasingly limited at the Emirates Stadium.
The manner of his departure drew criticism from club legend Ian Wright. Speaking on Sky Sports regarding Martinelli’s exclusion from the opening match against Coventry, Wright expressed deep concern:
“The way Martinelli is being treated at the moment, it really makes me feel uncomfortable. I know they might want him out, and a lot of people might say, ‘yeah, it’s time for him to move him on’. But there’s ways of doing that, and it should suit him as well, how he wants to leave.”
Al-Hilal continues to be a destination for high-profile talent, with Martinelli joining England striker Ollie Watkins, who recently moved from Aston Villa for 51 million pounds. As the European window closes, Arsenal must now recalibrate their tactical approach to ensure they remain competitive without these established stars in their forward rotation.
