President Donald Trump has announced his intention to formally report prominent NBC journalist Kristen Welker to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The move, declared via a public platform, centers on a dispute regarding Welker’s analysis of Trump’s electoral endorsements ahead of the upcoming November elections. Trump specifically took issue with her characterization of his primary season track record as yielding “mixed results.”

In response to the report, Trump challenged the legitimacy of the broadcast, questioning how such commentary is permitted on “freely given public airwaves.” To bolster his position, he shared a personal chart claiming that 98 percent of his endorsed candidates secured victories. He explicitly stated that due to what he categorized as “purposeful inaccuracy,” he would seek a formal rebuke or punishment from the federal regulatory agency.

A History of Media Confrontations

Kristen Welker, who serves as the host of NBC’s long-running news program Meet the Press, gained significant prominence for her role as moderator during the 2020 presidential election debate between Trump and Joe Biden. Her professional relationship with the President has been marked by recurring tension, most notably during a contentious interview in June.

“Your elections are crooked, and you’re crooked, and Meet the Press is crooked and so is ABC and CBS and CNN. You’re one-sided crooked networks,” the President remarked during the June exchange.

That interview concluded abruptly when the President removed his microphone and exited the set after being pressed on his continued claims regarding the integrity of the 2020 presidential election. This encounter highlights the ongoing friction between the President and major television networks, which he frequently labels as “crooked.”

Regulatory Pressures and Legal Battles

The threat to report Welker follows a broader pattern of the President leveraging regulatory oversight to contest media coverage. The FCC, tasked with managing broadcast standards, has faced criticism regarding its role in evaluating news outlets. Recently, Disney—the parent company of ABC News—filed a lawsuit against the agency, characterizing an ongoing license review of eight stations as clear retaliation.

According to ABC, these actions are intended to create a media environment where outlets are too fearful of official reprisal to report the news freely. This regulatory standoff intensified following public demands from Trump and his wife, Melania, that the network terminate late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over a joke directed at the First Lady.

Beyond regulatory threats, the President has pursued significant civil litigation against media organizations, alleging widespread defamation. These efforts include a $10 billion lawsuit filed last year against the BBC. In that instance, the President argued that the network unfairly edited footage of his speech delivered shortly before the January 6, 2021, events at the US Capitol to imply a false narrative.

The current situation underscores a critical moment for broadcast journalism, as the intersection of political rhetoric, federal regulation, and media accountability continues to escalate. Whether this formal complaint to the FCC will result in procedural action remains to be seen.
