Tensions in the occupied West Bank have reached a critical breaking point in the village of Qusra, south of Nablus. Reports from the region indicate that at least four Palestinians are currently trapped inside their home, held under a volatile siege by Israeli settlers supported by military forces. This ongoing confrontation marks a dangerous escalation in a campaign of intimidation that has gripped the village for the past three weeks.

The situation turned violent on Saturday when settlers began setting fire to land surrounding the residential area where families are confined. Emergency services are currently struggling to gain access to the site; local officials are working to coordinate safe passage for ambulances to reach the location and evacuate at least one individual reported to be suffering from injuries sustained during the unrest.

A Prolonged Humanitarian Crisis

Qusra has been subjected to a sustained campaign of hostility for over a month. The violence is not a new development, as the village has witnessed numerous provocations, including the burning of a local mosque last July. Since August 9, the situation in the Ras al-Ain neighborhood has deteriorated significantly, with three homes effectively under siege. Families inside these residences have been cut off from critical supplies, including water, electricity, and food.

Residents describe an environment of constant fear and restriction. Loui Abu Raideh, a local resident who has spent weeks confined within his own home, provided a harrowing account of the daily struggle for survival. He noted that the ability to secure basic necessities has become a bureaucratic and dangerous ordeal, often requiring days of coordination with the mayor’s office.

“We’re not allowed to live freely in and out of our houses; no one is allowed to bring us any food or visit us from family members or friends,” Raideh told Al Jazeera.

Military Restrictions and Isolation

The Israeli military has exacerbated the isolation of the village by declaring the area a closed military zone. A gate has been installed at the main entrance of Qusra, forcing residents to navigate difficult, alternative routes that are frequently blocked by forces. Last Wednesday, the military erected three additional roadblocks that effectively encircled the Ras al-Ain hill, severing links between homes and the community below.

For those trapped, the psychological toll is immense. Raideh described the situation as a perpetual state of anxiety, with families forced to remain vigilant throughout the night to monitor security cameras for potential settler incursions. The fear of an imminent attack has made peaceful sleep impossible for the residents, who feel increasingly abandoned.

While settler-related violence against Palestinian property and agricultural land has been a recurring issue for decades, observers note a marked increase in the frequency and intensity of these incidents since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023. These actions, often occurring with the support of Israeli military personnel, continue to displace and endanger communities across the occupied West Bank territory.
